It's about sacrifice. A Brief History Memorial Day originated as Decoration Day in the aftermath of the Civil War. Citizens across the country decorated the graves of fallen soldiers as a way to grieve, honor, and show gratitude. In 1971, it became a federal holiday—dedicated to commemorating all American service members who died in military conflict. It is a day rooted in loss, but also in unity, respect, and reflection.
