Honoring Memorial Day with Intention: A Message from Purciarele Group

At Purciarele Group, we believe Memorial Day is more than a long weekend or a chance to fire up the grill. It is a solemn day of remembrance—set aside to honor and reflect on the lives of those who paid the ultimate price while serving in the U.S. military. For us, it's not about cookouts or sales. It's about sacrifice.

A Brief History

Memorial Day originated as Decoration Day in the aftermath of the Civil War. Citizens across the country decorated the graves of fallen soldiers as a way to grieve, honor, and show gratitude. In 1971, it became a federal holiday—dedicated to commemorating all American service members who died in military conflict. It is a day rooted in loss, but also in unity, respect, and reflection.

Why It Still Matters

As HR professionals and business owners, we have the opportunity—and responsibility—to acknowledge that some of our employees carry this loss personally. They may be:

  • Gold Star Families – those who have lost a loved one in active duty

  • Veterans and active-duty spouses, who live with the memory and reality of that sacrifice

  • Descendants of military families, whose traditions and grief are often quiet but deeply felt

Recognizing this day with intention shows your team that your values go deeper than profit or policy—it shows heart.

How Employers Can Support Employees This Memorial Day

  1. Acknowledge the Day Internally

    • Send a thoughtful internal message or email that reflects the true meaning of Memorial Day.

    • Avoid overly commercial messaging or memes that dilute its significance.

  2. Offer Time Off or Flexibility

    • If you're open for business, offer flexible scheduling or consider floating holidays for employees who wish to attend services or events.

  3. Create Space for Reflection

    • Consider a moment of silence, a donation match to a military support charity, or a space (physical or digital) for team members to honor someone they’ve lost.

  4. Know Your Team

    • HR teams and leadership should be aware of which employees may have a deeper connection to this day and check in accordingly—with care, not obligation.

  5. Train with Compassion

    • Teach managers how to respectfully support team members who may feel heightened grief or emotion around military holidays.

Closing Thoughts

Memorial Day reminds us that freedom is not free—it is paid for with courage, service, and sacrifice. As leaders, we can honor that legacy by showing up with compassion, creating space for remembrance, and supporting our people in meaningful ways.

From all of us at Purciarele Group, thank you to the families who have given more than most could imagine. Your sacrifice is not forgotten.
